HIT REMAKE OF A FLOP FILM

THE TREND OF REMAKING OLD FILMS JUST GOT A BOOST WITH THE SUCCESS OF AGNEEPATH. BUT THAT IS NOT AS SIGNIFICANT AS THE FACT THAT THE PROFITS KARAN JOHAR MADE IN THIS REMAKE JUST MIGHT START OFF A NEW TREND - TO REMAKE OLD FLOPS INSTEAD OF HITS. THUS FAR, PRODUCERS HAD ALWAYS ATTEMPTED REMAKES OF OLD HITS AND BLOCKBUSTERS WITH THE EXCEPTION OF SUBHASH GHAI;S KARZ. BUT EVEN IN THE CASE OF KARZ, BHUSHAN KUMAR OF T-SERIES ACQUIRED ITS REMAKING RIGHTS UNDER THE MISTAKEN BELIEF THAT IT WAS A COMMERCIAL HIT. IT WAS ONLY AFTER THE REMAKING RIGHTS HAD BEEN PURCHASED THAT BHUSHAN KUMAR REALISED, THE FILM HAD BEEN A COMMERCIAL FLOP. HOWEVER, KARAN JOHAR, KNOWING FULLY WELL THAT HIS LATE FATHER'S AGNEEPATH WAS A BOX OFFICE DUD, ATTEMPTED ITS REMAKE BECAUSE HIS FATHER, YASH JOHAR, HAD ALWAYS DREAMT OF REMAKING THE FLOP WHICH WENT ON TO ACHIEVE CULT STATUS AFTER THE PUBLIC HAD REJECTED IT AT THE TICKET WINDOWS. WHILE BHUSHAN KUMARS KARZZZZ BOMBED AT THE BOX OFFICE, THE NEW AGNEEPATH PROVED A MAJOR SUCCESS. AND KNOWING HOW THE INDUSTRY FUNCTIONS ON HERD MENTALITY, THIS MIGHT PROMPT MORE PRODUCERS TO ACQUIRE THE REMAKING RIGHTS OF OLD FLOPS AND CONVERT THEM IN TO HITS. RAJ KUMAR SANTHOSHI'S ANDAZ APN APNA AND PRIYADARSHAN'S HERA PHERI COULD WELL BE TWO BOX OFFICE DUDS WAITING TO BE REMADE. YES, YOU READ IT RIGHT BOTH THE AFOREMANTIONED COMEDIES MET WITH TRAGIC RESULTS AT THE TICKET WINDOWS. AS AGAINST THAT, KARAN JOHAR AND HIS DISTRIBUTORS JOINTLY MADE A PROFIT OF APPROXIMATELY Rs 30 CRORE IN THE NEW AGNEEPATH.
